The WoW Ironman Challenge

One of the best things you can get in WoW from a gold maker's point of view is when you get a new market to dabble in and make profit out of. As of the last patch we got the Transmogrification market and we saw a explosion of posts all detailing ways to make gold off it, and they were all valid as you could make a lot of gold from it.
I don't know how much have you folks heard about this, but there has been a small movement of die hard hardcore players out there that have made a sort of an achievement for WoW players to prove their Elite status, and they have named this The Ironman Challenge.

Now i wouldn't have given this more of a though except, Blizzard has decided to give them some attention and publicity and usually when that happens people tend to go for it. Now if you take a look at the rules for the challenge you can notice a few things, but first here are the rules for it.

1) No items equipped other than White or Gray items.
2) No heirlooms
3) No talent points - no specialization - you may train class abilities
4) No professions, primary or secondary, other than First Aid.
5) No food or water above vendor-quality white items.
6) No groups- no BG's, no instances, no raids, no quest groups. No guilds.
7) No enchants, scrolls, potions/elixirs, or glyphs.
8) No outside financial or equipment assistance (no gold or bags from other toons)
9) THE BIG ONE - if you die, ever, you delete that toon and start over at lvl 1 Any takers? If you're doing it, post on that character and we will track your progress.

Further down in the rules there is something that caught my eye

  • Can I use the Auction House: Yes. you can use the auction house to sell drops.
  • Yes, you can buy white items from vendors.

What this meant was that they are allowed to sell their goods so they are allowed access to the auction house. Now knowing this fact there is an opening for a whole new market that has never EVER been a viable market, and that is the market for selling white/gray items as they will be allowed in the challenge. One item that comes into mind when trying to monetize on these guys is selling the vendor bag "Carriage" Signature Bag as it is a 14 slot bag that you can buy from a vendor.

As it is now i won't go into further detail, but keep your eyes open for this movement as if it takes on some more publicity it might turn in into a valid market.

So, like always, keep an eye out for good opportunities out there.

  1. These people don't have enough gold to pay for class training. How do you expect to make money where there is none?

    1. They are allowed to sell their items on the AH, so all those greens they get will go straight to the AH, and as the prices for Transmogrification are high they will have gold.

As an example i would take the druid i am leveling for the New In WoW series, i had to bench him due to not having the time but i continued selling transmog gear and now he is sitting on 8k gold

    2. You're assuming that on a regular basis, they will each come across items that are rare and valuable for transmog. And most importantly, that they will recognize the value of these items and price them accordingly. Those are some pretty big assumptions.

Remember, these people also aren't doing it for the gold. Having excess gold is counterproductive to their goals - having a hardcore experience.

    3. They will mainly be leveling by questing. They will find a few greens along the way for sure but I'm betting most of those will be vendored. I don't think they care if they have the latest full set of whites, they're gonna just use whatever grey/white they come across. Some are even doing it nude for the ultimate challenge.

  2. This opens a whole new market? That's just funny.

Demand is going to be crap, with the number of people doing this per realm. Really really basic economics, ie elementary school econ.

    1. When demand is crap, and supply is none there is still profit to be made from crap. Elementary economics :), but still i just said it would be market worth keeping an eye on and that it MIGHT turn into a valid market

  3. I would like to add a disclaimer, on the EU side Ironmen are only selling not buying on the AH. It seems to be a small difference between the US and EU realms.

    1. Well if they sack the AH with their rules then we won't have a market to dabble in.

  4. Having participated in this challenge I can assure you that the white items are fairly easy to get from vendors, and grey drops are more than enough to level without having to buy from the AH.

  5. @Anon .. see you are the first guy that has actually tried this event and has the experience with it, and if you claim that you don't need the AH for it, then it might be so. I'm not afraid to admit if someone's argument is valid and counters mine.

  6. Still good on ya for thinking outside the box kinda. I would not have thought of even considering this market.

  7. since the ah is acceptable you can easily put something up for a high amount and have a friend buy it out, and you don't even need anything that looks good/has good stats to make a decent amount of gold off of greens or other things that drop

    1. Well the whole idea behind the Ironman challenge is to challenge yourself and see how good you are. If you are looking for ways to cheat at the challenge then why even undertake it.

That was about having a friend buy your auctions.

  8. I did enter the challenge with a druid called IronStomp...just to get the challenging feeling back from Vanilla WoW. So far I reached level 20 and posted some screenshots on my blog www.macgames.eu
